Prompt engineering basics: 5 habits that get better answers
Better prompts get better results. Five simple habits you can use today with any AI assistant.
Why prompts matter
An AI assistant can only work with what you give it. Vague input produces vague output. These five habits fix most disappointing answers.
1. State the goal and the audience
Instead of "explain taxes", write: "Explain how freelancer taxes work to someone with no finance background, in under 200 words."
2. Give context
Include the background the model cannot guess: your industry, your constraints, what you already tried.
3. Show an example
If you want a certain style or format, paste a short example and say "write in this style".
4. Ask for a format
Request a table, a checklist, three options or a step-by-step plan. Structure makes answers easier to use.
5. Iterate
Treat the first answer as a draft. Say what to change: "shorter", "more formal", "add a risk section". Small follow-ups beat starting over.
One more rule: verify
Check facts, numbers and names before you rely on them. The model helps you think and draft; you stay responsible for the result.
